The social network Twitter speaks out for the care of the environment and celebrates Earth Day. The date turns 50 since its first commemoration
It is estimated that more than 300 million users are part of Twitter, of which 166 million use the application daily. The site created in 2006 is one of the most popular and most influential on the internet. The company is present in several countries around the world and has around 4,000 employees. The indicators show that Twitter is one of the most influential companies in the world and that the actions they take can generate a great impact.
With the aim of contributing to caring for the environment, Twitter decided to collaborate with the Earth Day Network on the occasion of the 50th celebration of Earth Day on April 22. From the firm they made important decisions that imply behavioral changes within the company regarding recycling, energy generation, adaptation of the offices to be more sustainable, creation of internal programs and training of workers in ecological matters.

The latest news on Twitter and the demonstration of commitment to caring for the environment mark a positive course for other companies to follow the same path. The social network partnered with one of the most important organizations in the field.
As reported on its official site, Earth Day Network's mission is to build the largest environmental movement in the world in order to achieve changes that affect people and planet Earth. The network that marks its beginnings in 1970 with the celebration of the first Earth Day has more than 75,000 associated companies in more than 190 countries.
The American senator Gaylord Nelson was the promoter in 1970 of a demonstration in the United States that had as its main motive the claims for the care of the environment until then dismissed by the authorities. The call was massive and it is estimated that 20 million people attended.
From that date every April 22 Earth Day is commemorated and slogans are raised that seek to protect the world from contamination. As the years passed, the call became more popular with greater social participation and an increase in the number of organizations involved throughout the world.
Monique Meche is the vice president of Global Public Policies and Philanthropy of the microblogging social network created in 2006, according to the official blog of the company regarding the commitment assumed by Twitter with the environment, the employee assured that:
“The fight for the future of our planet has never been more important. On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we’re thrilled to partner with the Earth Day Network and numerous nonprofit organizations around the globe to elevate the conversation around protecting our planet. At Twitter, we recognize how far we’ve come and acknowledge the critical work ahead of us. We’re committed to playing our part.”
The company took specific steps such as developing and refurbishing its offices to use water wisely, use carbon neutral energy, and work with renewable energy. In addition, it created a sustainability team with the aim of training its workers, reduced the use of plastic by eliminating around 200,000 products that used plastic, and installed containers to facilitate the recycling of waste in offices.
Twitter created an internal program for employees that encouraged them to participate and spread activities for green purposes. They also organized a campaign so that workers could donate funds to organizations dedicated to the issue.
Lastly, the platform disclosed and encouraged users to post with the hashtag #EarthDay and share information about the activities carried out that day.
Caring for the environment is everyone's job. As stated by Twitter and the Earth Day Network today, global warming and the expansion of the coronavirus are the most important concerns that must be addressed.
The news about Twitter and its collaboration on an issue as important as ecological allows us to be optimistic about a future that appears difficult but that can be managed with the collaboration of all.
